How it works

You do not have to be an athlete

A large share of the people who book this never set foot in a gym. Standing behind a counter all day, carrying heavy bags or cycling across the city loads the same muscle groups as running does. The complaint is the same; only the cause differs.

We ask what you have been doing

Legs after a long run need something different from shoulders after a swim session. Before we start we talk through what you have done and where it sits now, so the time goes to the muscles that actually need it.

Firm, but you set the limit

A sports massage is allowed to feel firm. Sharp pain is not part of it. The therapist builds pressure gradually and checks in along the way. Say it is too much and the pressure comes down without the treatment losing its effect.

Before or after exertion

Just before a race we keep it shorter and lighter, aimed at circulation. After a hard session we work deeper, aimed at recovery. Tell us what is coming up when you book and we adjust the approach.

Chinese technique, applied to sport

Our therapists work from Tui Na: gripping, stretching and kneading rather than only stroking. That suits muscles shortened by exertion, because the muscle is brought back to length instead of merely loosened.

What you notice afterwards

For the first few hours your muscles feel looser and sometimes heavy. Drink extra water that day and avoid a hard session straight after. Most people notice the clearest effect the following day.

Good to know

Sixty or ninety minutes?

Sixty minutes covers one region: legs, or back and shoulders. If you train several times a week and want the whole body worked through, take ninety. Within an hour the therapist cannot build up carefully everywhere.

How soon after training?

Straight after hard exertion the muscles are still irritated; waiting a day usually gives a better result. If you have soreness that has lingered for a few days, that is exactly the right moment to come in.

When not to book

Not advisable with a fresh injury, visible swelling, a muscle tear, fever or inflammation. That belongs with a doctor or physiotherapist first. In doubt, send us a message describing what happened.

Frequently asked

Is this the same as physiotherapy?

No. We are a massage salon, not a physiotherapy practice. We do not diagnose and we do not treat injuries. We do work at muscle level with the same firm approach. If you have an injury, see a physiotherapist first.

Is it covered by insurance?

No. We are not a registered healthcare provider, so Dutch health insurers do not reimburse this treatment. You pay the rate listed above, with no referral or extra conditions.

Can I come right before a race?

You can, but we will deliberately keep it shorter and lighter. Deep work just before exertion can leave your muscles feeling heavier for a while. Tell us when your race or session is when you book.
